Helios & Industar · M42 screw mount
The Industar-61 is a Soviet four-element, three-group lens of the Tessar family, designed at GOI by G. Slyusarev and V. Sokolova. FED in Kharkov made most of the rangefinder versions, KMZ built a small batch of an M42 Industar-61M, and the SLR version you'll usually find, the Industar-61 L/Z 2.8/50, came from LZOS, the Lytkarino optical glass factory. Zenitcamera reads L/Z as lanthanum glass for a reflex (zerkalny) camera, though the L may first have stood for Lytkarino. The Industar-61 was the first Soviet consumer lens to use super-heavy crown glass, in its two positive elements. The L/Z is multicoated, weighs about 225 g and focuses down to 0.3 m, so it doubles as a close-up 50 on mirrorless. It has a stop-down pin, so pick an M42 adapter that presses it.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a M42 screw mount lens, and its mount sits 45.46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Several Industar-61s exist. The L/Z from LZOS is the multicoated M42 SLR lens marked 2.8/50. The plain Industar-61 and the L/D from FED in Kharkov are rangefinder lenses for the M39 Leica thread, marked 52, 53 or 55mm, and they won't focus to infinity on an SLR adapter. KMZ's Industar-61M and 61A were small runs. Some export L/Z lenses are misprinted MS instead of MC.
Expect the age faults of any Soviet lens, like oily blades, haze and stiff or uneven focusing. A stop-down pin that sticks will leave the iris open.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy an L/Z titled serviced at about $120 delivered, the median, from the 99.9% seller in Ukraine who lists several. There are at least 21 for sale, nearly all from Ukraine with $15–25 shipping, and most ask $100–150 delivered. It has a stop-down pin, so buy an M42 adapter that presses it or the iris stays open, and the model page lists the adapters by camera. Read the name ring for L/Z and 2.8/50, since a plain Industar-61 marked 52, 53 or 55mm is an M39 rangefinder lens that won't reach infinity on an SLR adapter, and MS in place of MC is a known export misprint. Skip the $95 copy whose exact title shows up under three seller accounts.
