Rendering look
Flare is light bouncing between the glass surfaces inside a lens. It shows up as ghosts, often in the shape of the aperture, and as a veil that lifts the shadows and drains color. Bare glass reflects about 4% of the light at every surface, a single layer of coating cuts that to about 1%, and multi-coating goes lower still, so uncoated and single-coated lenses flare far more than later multi-coated versions. Lenses with more elements have more surfaces to bounce off. To get it, use a single-coated lens with no hood and put the sun or a bright lamp at the edge of the frame. A light just outside the frame gives a softer haze instead of ghosts.
