Canon · Canon FD · From 1975, New FD from 1979
The 28mm f/2.8 was Canon's everyday FD wide, and it's still one of the easiest FD lenses to find. The breech-lock FD 28mm f/2.8 S.C. came out in 1975, a seven-element lens with every element air-spaced, and Canon slimmed it in 1977. The New FD version from 1979 kept the same layout in a 170 g barrel only 40 mm long, which made it one of the lightest lenses in the system. It focuses to 0.3 m and has five aperture blades, so stopped-down highlights turn into pentagons. Casual Photophile found the New FD copy very sharp from f/2.8 but prone to ghosts and flare with the sun in frame, even with a hood. On APS-C it frames like a 42mm, a handy everyday normal. Off a Canon body the blades stay open until the aperture lever is held, so set your adapter's lock first. Canon's museum notes the S.C. version II added a clamp that locks that lever at the L mark.
Known forHarsh flare
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Canon FD lens, and its mount sits 42 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
The breech-lock lens is the FD 28mm f/2.8 S.C., made as version I from March 1975 (280 g) and version II from April 1977 (230 g). The two differ in how the aperture lever locks, with version II adding a clamp you set at the L mark. Both take 55 mm filters. The New FD version from June 1979 keeps the same 7-element layout in a 170 g, 40 mm-long barrel with 52 mm filters. The FD 28mm f/2 and f/3.5 are different lenses.
Flare and ghosting into the sun come with the design, so don't mistake them for damage. On used copies watch for haze, fungus and oily blades. The New FD barrel and filter thread are plastic, and a drop onto the front can leave the thread unusable.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy a New FD 28mm titled serviced and tested at $99 delivered, or a US copy titled tested and working with Canon caps and a filter at $95. There are at least 171 for sale and most ask $100–150 delivered, with Japan dealers' grades and an included hood or box pushing toward the top of that. The breech-lock S.C. has a chrome locking ring and takes 55 mm filters, while the 170 g New FD has a release button and takes 52 mm, and flare with the sun in frame comes with the design rather than damage. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back and a photo of all five blades at f/8, and skip the $840 MINT++ copy, about 6.9 times the median. It needs a Canon FD adapter with its lock set so the blades close, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
