Canon · Canon FD · From 1971, New FD from 1979
Canon launched the FD 24mm f/2.8 with the rest of the FD system in March 1971, and it went through three versions. The first breech-lock lens weighs about 410 g. The S.S.C. version followed in 1973 with Canon's better coating and a lighter barrel, and the New FD lens arrived in June 1979 as a new ten-element design that's much smaller and takes 52 mm filters instead of 55 mm. Canon's literature credits its 24s with a floating system, a group that moves on its own so the lens stays sharp up close, and every version focuses to 0.3 m. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a true 24mm, and on APS-C it frames like a 35. One thing catches people out. Off a Canon camera an FD lens holds its blades wide open until its aperture lever is pushed, so set your adapter's lock before you decide the aperture ring is broken. The breech-lock versions are the bigger, heavier ones, and the New FD is the compact pick.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Canon FD lens, and its mount sits 42 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Three versions. The March 1971 original has no coating label and weighs 410 g. The S.S.C. version from March 1973 has the same 9-element optics in a 330 g barrel. Both take 55 mm filters and stop down to f/16. The New FD version from June 1979 is a new 10-element design that weighs 240 g, takes 52 mm filters and stops down to f/22. The New FD 24mm f/2 from the same year is a different, faster lens.
These are 40 to 55 years old, so haze, fungus and dust inside are the usual problems. Oily aperture blades, which stick or close slowly, are common on any lens this age.

Buying guide
We'd buy a New FD 24mm titled tested, like the one asking $151 delivered from a 100% Japan dealer, or the cheapest fixed-price US copy, a breech-lock S.S.C. at $109 delivered. There are at least 199 for sale and most ask $160–230 delivered, a band Japan dealers set, while US sellers here ask $109–284. The breech-lock versions have a chrome locking ring and take 55 mm filters, and the smaller New FD has a release button and takes 52 mm. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze or fungus and a photo of the blades at f/8, and skip the $900 S.S.C., about 4.7 times the median. It needs a Canon FD adapter, and you set the adapter's lock before the blades will close; the model page lists the adapters by camera.
