Japan · 11 lenses
Canon began in 1933 as the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory. The lenses in our catalog belong to its FD system, which launched with the professional F-1 in March 1971 and replaced the older FL mount. FD lenses close the aperture at the moment of exposure and tell the body which f-stop is set, so the camera can meter with the lens wide open. The first FD lenses lock on with a silver breech-lock ring that turns while the lens stays still. New FD lenses twist on as a whole, like any bayonet, and fit the same bodies. Early lenses are marked S.C. or S.S.C. for their coatings, and by the New FD era every lens had S.S.C. except the 50mm f/1.8, so the label was dropped. Canon moved to EOS and the EF mount in 1987, and FD lenses don't fit EOS bodies without corrective glass.
