Canon's FD 200mm f/4 was another lens from the first FD lineup in 1971, and it changed more than most between generations. The breech-lock versions are six-element lenses that focus to 2.5 m. The 1973 S.S.C. one added Canon's better coating, a built-in hood and a 50 g diet. The New FD lens from 1979 is a different design. It has seven elements, focuses by moving only the rear group, so the barrel doesn't grow as you focus, and it gets down to 1.5 m. At 440 g it's the smallest and lightest FD 200mm. That makes it the easier one to carry on a mirrorless body, where it frames like a 300mm on APS-C. Off a Canon body the blades stay open until the aperture lever is held, so set your adapter's lock first. A 200mm on an adapter is front-heavy, so support the lens rather than the camera.

Which adapter, and what it becomes
It’s a Canon FD lens, and its mount sits 42 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Three versions. The March 1971 original weighs 725 g and the S.S.C. version from March 1973 weighs 675 g with a built-in hood. Both are 6-element lenses with 55 mm filters that focus to 2.5 m. The New FD 200mm f/4 from June 1979 is a new 7-element, rear-focusing design at 440 g with 52 mm filters, a built-in hood, f/32 and 1.5 m close focus. The New FD 200mm f/4 Macro and the 200mm f/2.8 are different lenses.
What to check
Haze, fungus and oily blades are the usual age faults. Check that the built-in hood slides out and stays put, and that the focus ring isn't loose from years of use.
01Haze and fungus: Ask for a photo of a flashlight shone through the lens from the back. The glass should look clear, with no milky fog or threadlike webs.
02Separation: In that flashlight photo, look at the rim of each element. A rainbow sheen or cloudy edge means a cemented pair is separating.
03Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8 while the lever is held. They should be dry and matte, with no shine or oil spots.
04Aperture lever: Ask for a short video pushing the lever on the back of the lens with the ring set to f/16. The blades should snap shut and spring fully open again when you let go.
05Built-in hood: Ask for a photo with the hood pulled out. It should extend fully and stay in place without sliding back.
06Mount version: Look at the base of the lens in the photos. A chrome locking ring means breech-lock FD, and a black barrel with a release button means the lighter New FD.
We'd buy a New FD graded Exc+5 at $72 delivered from a Japan dealer, the lighter rear-focusing version, or a US breech-lock S.S.C. from $45 delivered. There are at least 107 for sale and most ask $55–100 delivered, while most complete US copies here ask $45–60. The 1971 and S.S.C. lenses are six-element breech-lock designs with a chrome locking ring that focus to 2.5 m, and the 1979 New FD is a 440 g seven-element lens with a release button that focuses to 1.5 m without the barrel growing. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back and, on the S.S.C. and New FD, one with the built-in hood pulled out, and skip the $240 copy at about 3.3 times the median. It needs a Canon FD adapter with its lock set so the blades close, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
