The FD 135mm f/2.5 was the fast 135 of the breech-lock FD years, a full stop brighter than the f/3.5 version. It arrived in 1971 and got its S.C. label for Spectra Coating in 1973, the cheaper of Canon's two coating grades. Inside are six elements in five groups and eight aperture blades, it focuses to 1.5 m, and it takes 58 mm filters, a size the FD 135mm f/3.5 doesn't share. At 630 g it's a solid lump. Canon never made a New FD version. When the twist-on mount arrived in 1979 the 135s became f/2, f/2.8 and f/3.5 lenses. On full frame it's a classic tight portrait lens, and on APS-C it frames like a 200mm. Off a Canon body the blades stay open until the aperture lever is held, so set your adapter's lock first.
It’s a Canon FD lens, and its mount sits 42 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
The S.C. label arrived in March 1973. The March 1971 FD 135mm f/2.5 before it has the same optics, no coating label, and weighs 670 g. There was no New FD 135mm f/2.5. The New FD line offered 135mm lenses at f/2, f/2.8 and f/3.5 instead, and the breech-lock FD 135mm f/3.5 S.C. is a different, smaller lens.
What to check
Heavy breech-lock teles get knocked around, so look for dents on the filter rim and a loose locking ring. Haze, fungus and oily blades are the other usual faults.
01Lens identity: Look at the front ring in the photos. It should read 135mm 1:2.5, with S.C. on copies from 1973 on.
02Haze and fungus: Ask for a photo of a flashlight shone through the lens from the back. The glass should look clear, with no milky fog or threadlike webs.
03Separation: In that flashlight photo, look at the rim of each element. A rainbow sheen or cloudy edge means a cemented pair is separating.
04Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8 while the lever is held. They should be dry and matte, with no shine or oil spots.
05Aperture lever: Ask for a short video pushing the lever on the back of the lens with the ring set to f/16. The blades should snap shut and spring fully open again when you let go.
06Barrel and ring: Look at the filter rim and the chrome locking ring in the photos. Both should be round and free of dents.
We'd buy the S.C. titled tested at $74 delivered with Best Offer, or a US copy with both caps at $86, both under the band. There are at least 127 for sale and most ask $95–150 delivered, a band Japan dealers set with near-mint grades, while US sellers here ask $52–98 apart from the auction and the warnings. Read the front ring for 135mm 1:2.5 and S.C., since the f/3.5 is a smaller, different lens, and look at the filter rim and chrome locking ring in the photos for dents, because this 630 g lens gets knocked around. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze, fungus or a rainbow edge from separation, and skip the 83.3% and zero-feedback sellers and the $600 copy at about 5.1 times the median. It needs a Canon FD adapter with its lock set so the blades close, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
