Canon · Canon FD · From 1971, New FD from 1979
The FD 100mm f/2.8 was in the first batch of FD lenses in March 1971. It's a simple five-element design with every element air-spaced, and it focuses to 1 m. The 1973 S.S.C. version added Canon's better coating and shed 70 g, and the New FD lens from 1979 is smaller again at 270 g, with 52 mm filters and six aperture blades instead of eight. That makes the breech-lock versions the ones to pick if you like rounder out-of-focus highlights stopped down. On full frame it's a tight portrait lens, and on APS-C it frames like a 150mm. Off a Canon body the blades stay open until the aperture lever is held, so set your adapter's lock first.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Canon FD lens, and its mount sits 42 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Three versions with the same 5-element layout. The March 1971 original weighs 430 g and the S.S.C. version from March 1973 weighs 360 g. Both have eight blades, 55 mm filters and f/22. The New FD version from June 1979 weighs 270 g, takes 52 mm filters, has six blades and stops down to f/32. The New FD 100mm f/2 and the 100mm f/4 Macro are different lenses.
With no cemented groups, separation isn't a worry. Haze, fungus and oily blades are the faults to look for.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy the S.S.C. titled tested with a hood at $154 delivered from a Japan dealer, or the US S.S.C. with caps at $103 if you'll ask for photos through the glass first. There are at least 115 for sale and most ask $120–170 delivered, while US sellers here start at $98 and Japan dealers' near-mint grades fill the band. The breech-lock versions have eight blades, a chrome locking ring and 55 mm filters, and the lighter New FD has six blades, a release button and 52 mm filters, so pick a breech-lock lens if you want rounder highlights stopped down. It has no cemented groups, so ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze or fungus and one of the blades at f/8 with the lever held, and skip the zero-feedback seller and the $623 copy at about 4.2 times the median. It needs a Canon FD adapter with its lock set so the blades close, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
$98.00delivered
The lowest delivered complete lens here, with caps, at $98 delivered from a 99.7% US seller, under the band. The 52 mm filter size in the title points to the New FD with six blades, and there's no condition claim, so ask for a flashlight photo through the back.
