The 100mm f/2.8 arrived with the early OM system and stayed in the line with its five elements in five groups unchanged all along. It's 48 mm long, weighs about 230 g and takes 49 mm filters, so it's barely bigger than a standard lens. Early copies read E.Zuiko Auto-T, E for five elements, and some have a silver-chrome filter ring, the silver nose. Later copies are all black and may carry an MC mark. Coatings are the main difference between versions, and it isn't always clear which E.Zuikos are multicoated, so look at the coating reflections as well as the label. It focuses to 1 m. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a compact portrait lens. On APS-C it frames like a 150mm, and on Micro Four Thirds like a 200mm. Don't confuse it with the 100mm f/2, a much bigger lens from the mid-1980s with ED glass and a 55 mm thread.
Olympus OM bayonet. The aperture ring sits at the front of the barrel, and the depth-of-field preview button is on the lens.

Which adapter, and what it becomes
It’s a Olympus OM lens, and its mount sits 46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Early copies read E.Zuiko Auto-T, and some have a silver-chrome filter ring. Later ones are all black, read Zuiko Auto-T, and may carry an MC mark. The optics never changed, only coatings and cosmetics. The 100mm f/2 is a different, much heavier lens with ED glass and a 55 mm thread.
What to check
The usual age faults apply, mainly haze, fungus and oil on the aperture blades. All five elements are air-spaced, so balsam separation isn't a concern.
01Haze: Ask for a photo with a flashlight shining through the lens from the back. The glass should look clear, with no grey fog.
02Fungus: Check the same photo for fine branching threads or spots. Clean glass shows nothing but the odd speck of dust.
03Front element: Look at the front element at an angle in the photos. Faint cleaning marks are fine, and a deep scratch or chip near the centre isn't.
04Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8. They should be dry and matte, with no shine or oil spots.
05Version: Check the front ring in the photos for f/2.8, not f/2. E.Zuiko, silver nose or plain black with MC are all this lens.
06Focus ring: On arrival, turn the focus from 1 m to infinity and back. It should feel smooth and even, with no grit or tight spots.
We'd buy the E.Zuiko a Japan dealer titles tested and grades Exc, at $160 delivered with free shipping, under the band, or the US dealer's E.Zuiko at $94 delivered after asking for photos. There are at least 46 for sale and most ask $180–290 delivered, mostly from Japan dealers, while US sellers ask $94–219, the top one a late Zuiko with a leather case and UV filter. Early copies read E.Zuiko Auto-T and some have a silver-chrome filter ring, later ones are all black and may say MC, and only the coatings and cosmetics changed, so buy on condition. All five elements are air-spaced, so ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze and fungus and one of the blades at f/8, and skip the $393 bare-titled copy at about 1.6 times the median. It needs an Olympus OM adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
