Minolta's 100mm f/2.5 went through two optical designs and several generations, and the MD version is the compact end of the line. The first MC Tele Rokkor-PF had six elements in five groups. The MC Tele Rokkor-X PE that followed dropped to five elements in five groups and focused closer, to 1 m, and the MD Tele Rokkor-X kept that formula while adding the MD tab. Minolta collector lists put it at about 365 g with a 55 mm thread, and the later plain MD 100mm f/2.5 came in both 55 mm and 49 mm versions. The Rokkor Files counts the 100mm f/2.5 among the lenses Minolta made lighter early in the MD era. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a compact portrait lens, a little faster than the usual f/2.8 hundreds. On APS-C it frames like a 150mm, and on Micro Four Thirds like a 200mm. Its five elements are all air-spaced, so you're checking for haze and fungus more than separation.
It’s a Minolta SR (MC / MD) lens, and its mount sits 43.5 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
The first MC Tele Rokkor-PF 100mm f/2.5 has six elements in five groups and focuses to 1.2 m. The later MC Tele Rokkor-X PE, the MD Tele Rokkor-X and the plain MD 100mm f/2.5 share the five-element design. MD Rokkor-X copies take 55 mm filters, and plain MD copies came with either 55 mm or 49 mm threads.
What to check
Age faults are the usual haze, fungus and oily blades. All five elements are air-spaced, so balsam separation isn't a concern.
01Haze: Ask for a photo with a flashlight shining through the lens from the back. The glass should look clear, with no grey fog.
02Fungus: Check the same photo for fine branching threads or spots. Clean glass shows nothing but the odd speck of dust.
03Front element: Look at the front element at an angle in the photos. Faint cleaning marks are fine, and a deep scratch or chip near the centre isn't.
04Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8. They should be dry and matte, with no shine or oil spots.
05Version: Read the front ring in the photos for MD, 1:2.5 and the filter size. An MC copy or a 100mm Macro is a different lens.
06Focus ring: On arrival, turn the focus from 1 m to infinity and back. It should feel smooth and even, with no grit or tight spots.
We'd buy the Japan dealer's MD Tele Rokkor graded Exc+5 at $140 delivered, or pay $179 for the US seller's Rokkor-X titled Mint- with its hood, cap and jewel case. We found only six for sale, so the $140–290 band comes from six asks and is a rough guide at best. The MD Tele Rokkor-X takes 55 mm filters and the plain New MD came with 55 mm or 49 mm threads, with the same five air-spaced elements, so Rare in a New MD title doesn't mean a different lens. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze and fungus and one of the blades at f/8, and skip the $369 New MD titled Rare at about 1.8 times the median. It needs a Minolta SR/MD adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
