Asahi's literature pitched the 105mm f/2.8 as the link between the standard lenses and the long teles, a compact, well-balanced lens for scenery, portraits and news pictures. Asahi made one in every screw-mount generation, and the Super-Takumar is the fully automatic version from before the 1971 multi-coating. It's a 5-element, 4-group design that focuses to 1.2 m, and it takes the same 49mm filters as the 50mm and 55mm standard lenses, unlike the 85mm f/1.9. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's still a good length for portraits and details. On APS-C it frames like a 158mm, and on Micro Four Thirds like a 210mm. The 1.2 m close focus keeps it from getting very tight on small things. On a plain M42 adapter, set the Auto/Manual switch to M so the aperture ring stops the lens down.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a M42 screw mount lens, and its mount sits 45.46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Asahi made a 105mm f/2.8 in every screw-mount generation: a preset Takumar, a semi-automatic Auto-Takumar, this fully automatic Super-Takumar and the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar of 1971, which has its own page. Asahi's brochure for the multi-coated one gives the same 5 elements in 4 groups, 1.2 m close focus and 49mm filter as this lens. The preset and Auto-Takumar versions work differently on an adapter, so check the name on the front ring.
The usual age faults apply: haze or fungus inside, oily aperture blades and focusing grease that has dried out or gone stiff.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy from a US seller, like the $74 delivered copy titled with clear glass and shown with its case, or pay $120 for one with the case and Asahi hood. There are at least 54 for sale and most ask $110–190 delivered, a band Japan dealers set, while US sellers mostly ask $75–140. Check that the front ring says Super-Takumar, since the preset and Auto-Takumar 105mm lenses work differently on an adapter, and ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze and fungus. It needs an M42 adapter, with the Auto/Manual switch on M for a plain one or on A with a pin-pushing one, and the model page lists the adapters by camera. Skip the $100 copy from a seller with no feedback that uses another seller's title word for word.
$73.88est. delivered
The lowest delivered 105mm here at $74, titled with clear glass and rated Very Good by a 100% US seller, and the photo shows a case and front cap. It's well under the band, so ask for a flashlight shot to back up the clear-glass claim.
Asahi Pentax Super-Takumar 105mm f2.8 M42 NICE CLEAR GASS Very Good
$95.65est. delivered
At $96 delivered from a 100% US seller it's under the band, and the front glass looks clean in the photo apart from one small spot, so ask whether that's dust. There are no caps in the photo, and caps cost a few dollars.

$120.00delivered
Comes with the case and an Asahi hood, both in the photo, at $120 delivered with free shipping from a 100% US seller, near the median. Ask for a flashlight shot, since the title makes no claim about the glass.
