This was Asahi's portrait lens of the Super-Takumar years, a compact 85mm with 5 elements in 4 groups, a 58mm filter and a close focus of 0.85 m. It sat between the 55mm standard lenses and the 105mm f/2.8 in the line, and a Super-Multi-Coated version followed in 1971. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a classic head-and-shoulders length, and depth of field at f/1.9 is thin enough that magnified focus or peaking really helps. On APS-C it frames like a 128mm, which suits tighter portraits and stage work. Early copies stop down to f/22 and later ones to f/16, a quick way to place a listing. Like every Super-Takumar, it has an Auto/Manual switch. On a plain M42 adapter, set it to M so the aperture ring closes the blades, or use an adapter with a pin-pushing flange.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a M42 screw mount lens, and its mount sits 45.46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Camera-wiki lists two versions, this Super-Takumar and a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar, and Japanese sources say early copies stop down to f/22 and later ones to f/16. Multi-coated listings show up here too, so read the front ring. Don't mix it up with the 85mm f/1.8, sold first as an Auto-Takumar and later, redesigned, as a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. Camera-wiki lists the multi-coated 85mm f/1.8 among lenses with thoriated glass, and it doesn't list this f/1.9.
Expect the usual age faults: haze or fungus between the elements, oily aperture blades and focusing grease that has dried or stiffened.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy from a US seller, like the $299 delivered copy titled Excellent with free shipping, or pay $342 for one with caps, hood and case. There are at least 34 for sale and most ask $330–525 delivered, a band Japan dealers set, while US sellers mostly ask $265–345 for the same lens. Multi-coated copies share the page, so read the front ring, and treat Japan grades like Top MINT as the dealer's claim and read the description for any noted faults. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze and fungus and a shot of the blades at f/8, and pass on the two sellers under 98% feedback. It needs an M42 adapter, with the Auto/Manual switch on M for a plain one or on A with a pin-pushing one, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
