Adapter · M42 to Canon RF adapter
M42 screw mount lenses on Canon RF
A M42 screw mount lens was built to sit 45.46 mm from the film. A Canon RF camera's mount sits 20 mm from its sensor, so an adapter 25.46 mm deep puts the lens back where it was designed to be, and it focuses from close up to infinity with no glass in between.

What the adapter has to do
Most M42 lenses close the aperture only when a pin at the back is pushed in, a job the camera body did at the moment of exposure. On a plain adapter nothing pushes it, so set the lens's A/M switch to M and the aperture follows the ring. A lens without a switch needs an adapter with a plate that holds the pin in, and some adapters are built that way. Older preset lenses have no pin at all.

- 01Set Release shutter w/o lens to Enable in the Custom Functions menu. On Disable the camera won't fire on a plain adapter, and in-body stabilization stays off.
- 02On bodies with in-body stabilization, set IS mode to On and enter the lens's focal length, from 1 to 1000mm.
- 03Turn on MF peaking settings in the AF menu.
- 04Press the magnify button to zoom in and check focus.
What each lens becomes
On a full-frame Canon RF body these lenses frame just as they did on film. On a smaller sensor the frame is cropped, so each lens frames like a longer one. The f-number still sets exposure, while the depth of field looks like the larger number shown.
