Pentax · M42 screw mount · From 1971
Asahi's literature introduced it as a new super-wide-angle lens of 7 elements, and the 1975 catalog lists it as 7 elements in 7 groups with a 0.4 m close focus and a 49mm filter. It belongs to the Super-Multi-Coated generation that arrived in 1971, when Asahi worked with the American firm OCLI on a coating of up to seven layers, at a time when most multi-coating meant two. Asahi sold that coating on more light through the lens, better contrast and less flare against the sun. It weighs 218 g. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a true wide angle for architecture and interiors. On APS-C it frames like a 42mm, close to a normal lens. The lug on the back fed the aperture setting to the Spotmatic F and ES for open-aperture metering, and it does nothing on an adapter.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a M42 screw mount lens, and its mount sits 45.46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Collector lists show this lens only as a Super-Takumar and a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar, and the front ring reads Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR. Asahi's January 1975 catalog and most sellers shorten that to SMC Takumar. The older single-coated Super-Takumar 28mm f/3.5 took 58mm filters, and its early copies stop down to f/22. This one takes 49mm filters and stops at f/16. K-mount SMC Pentax lenses won't fit an M42 adapter.
The usual age faults apply: haze or fungus inside, oily aperture blades and dried focusing grease. If you also shoot film, the metering lug can catch on the mount screws of some older M42 bodies such as the Zenit-E and make the lens hard to remove.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy a copy graded Exc+5 with caps, like the $89 delivered one from a 100% Japan dealer, or pay $117 for one titled with clear optics and tested. There are at least 129 for sale, nearly all from Japan dealers, and most ask $100–150 delivered, while the few US Buy It Now copies ask about $130–185. The front ring should read Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1:3.5/28, since the older single-coated Super-Takumar 28mm takes 58mm filters, and with seven separate elements it's worth a flashlight photo through the back to check all of them for haze and fungus. It needs an M42 adapter, with the Auto/Manual switch on M on a plain one, if your copy has a switch, or a pin-pushing one instead, the metering lug on the back does nothing there, and the model page lists the adapters by camera. Skip the $290 boxed copy, about 2.5 times the median.
