The 35mm f/3.5 was Asahi's everyday wide angle through the screw-mount years. It ran from the Auto-Takumar through the Super-Takumar to the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar, and this Super-Takumar is the fully automatic version from before Asahi's 1971 multi-coating. It's small, focuses down to 0.45 m and takes the same 49mm filters as the Super-Takumar 50mm f/1.4 and 55mm f/1.8, so one set of filters covers a three-lens kit. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a modest wide for street and travel pictures. On APS-C it frames like a 53mm, which makes it a tidy little standard lens for a Fuji or Sony crop body. f/3.5 is slow, so it's a daylight lens, and focus peaking does most of the work. Early copies stop down to f/22 and later ones to f/16, which is the quickest way to tell them apart in a listing.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a M42 screw mount lens, and its mount sits 45.46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Asahi made a 35mm f/3.5 in three screw-mount generations: the semi-automatic Auto-Takumar, this fully automatic Super-Takumar, and the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar of 1971. Early Super-Takumars stop down to f/22 and later ones to f/16. The multi-coated version is listed as 5 elements in 4 groups with a 49mm filter, and its listings show up here too, so read the front ring. Don't confuse it with the Super-Takumar 35mm f/2, a much bigger lens that takes a 67mm or 70mm filter.
The usual age faults apply: haze or fungus inside, oily aperture blades and focusing grease that has dried out or stiffened. The Auto/Manual switch and the aperture pin are small moving parts that can stick after years in a drawer.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy a single-coated Super-Takumar graded Near MINT with both caps, like the $91 delivered one from a 100% Japan dealer, or pay $130 for one with a Takumar hood in the photo. There are at least 121 for sale and most ask $100–160 delivered, a band Japan dealers set, while US sellers ask about $90–155 for the same lens. Multi-coated copies share the page, so read the front ring for Super-Takumar or Super-Multi-Coated, and ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze and fungus and a shot of the blades at f/8. It needs an M42 adapter, with the Auto/Manual switch set to M on a plain one or left on A with a pin-pushing one, and the model page lists the adapters by camera. Skip the $343 multi-coated copy from Japan, about 2.8 times the median.

The lowest delivered 35mm f/3.5 here at $84, and it's the Super-Multi-Coated version, so you get the later coating for the least money. The title makes no condition claim, so ask for a flashlight photo through the glass.

US seller, front cap in the photo. The front glass is hard to judge in the photo, so ask for a flashlight shot.
