The G.Zuiko Auto-W 35mm f/2.8 came out with the first OM cameras in 1972, and the G tells you how many elements it has. Olympus used a letter code on its early lenses, with E for five elements, F for six and G for seven, and phased it out in the early 1980s. This one is a retrofocus design of seven elements in six groups that Olympus never changed. Later copies just say Zuiko, and the first ones marked MC date from around 1984. It's small even by OM standards, focuses to 0.3 m and takes 49 mm filters. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's an easy everyday 35. On APS-C it frames like a 52mm, and on Micro Four Thirds it becomes a 70mm-equivalent short tele. Don't mix it up with the 35mm f/2, an eight-element lens with a 55 mm filter thread, or with the 35mm f/2.8 Shift, a big specialist lens for architecture.
Olympus OM bayonet. The aperture ring sits at the front of the barrel, and the depth-of-field preview button is on the lens.

Which adapter, and what it becomes
It’s a Olympus OM lens, and its mount sits 46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Early copies read G.Zuiko Auto-W, the G meaning seven elements. Later copies read just Zuiko, and the MC mark arrived very late, around 1984. The optics didn't change. The 35mm f/2 (H.Zuiko, eight elements, 55 mm filters) and the 35mm f/2.8 Shift are different lenses.
What to check
Expect the usual age problems on an early-1970s design, mainly haze, fungus and oily aperture blades. There's one cemented group among its seven elements, so look for separation too.
01Haze: Ask for a photo with a flashlight shining through the lens from the back. The glass should look clear, with no grey fog.
02Fungus: Check the same photo for fine branching threads or spots. Clean glass shows nothing but the odd speck of dust.
03Separation: Look in that photo for a rainbow sheen or a pale patch at the edge of one element. Good glass looks evenly clear right to the rim.
04Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8. They should be dry and matte, with no shine or oil spots.
05Version: Read the front ring in the photos. G.Zuiko Auto-W and a plain Zuiko with MC are both this lens, and the MC copies are the later ones.
06Focus ring: On arrival, turn the focus from 0.3 m to infinity and back. It should feel smooth and even, with no grit or tight spots.
We'd buy the G.Zuiko titled tested at $117 delivered, under the band, or pay $170 for the copy titled operation confirmed with a hood, filter and caps in the photo. There are at least 57 for sale and most ask $130–210 delivered, nearly all from Japan dealers, while the two US copies on the page ask $130 and $258. Early copies read G.Zuiko Auto-W and later ones plain Zuiko, with MC from around 1984, and the optics never changed, so buy on condition and ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze, fungus and separation in its one cemented group. Skip the copy titled poor condition at $162, and the two listings that share one boxed photo, one of them at $458. It needs an Olympus OM adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
