Minolta's 35mm f/2.8 changed more than its name suggests. The early MC W.Rokkor-HG was a seven-element, six-group design, and around 1975 Minolta replaced it with a simpler five-element, five-group lens that focuses closer, to 0.3 m. That design carried into the MD W.Rokkor-X in 1977, which added the MD tab and an f/22 stop, switched from 55 mm to 49 mm filters in 1978, and lived on from 1981 as the plain MD 35mm f/2.8. The Rokkor Files calls it compact, lightweight and inexpensive to replace if lost, which makes it a natural travel lens. All five elements are air-spaced, so there's no cement to separate. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a small everyday 35. On APS-C it frames like a 52mm, and on Micro Four Thirds like a 70mm. The faster 35mm f/1.8 is a different, eight-element lens, so check the aperture on the front ring before you pay.
Minolta SR bayonet, MD generation, with both the MC meter-coupling tab and the MD minimum-aperture tab. Adapters ignore both.

Which adapter, and what it becomes
It’s a Minolta SR (MC / MD) lens, and its mount sits 43.5 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
The MD W.Rokkor-X of 1977 took 55 mm filters, the 1978 version switched to 49 mm and added more plastic, and from 1981 it was sold as the plain MD 35mm f/2.8 with the same five-element formula. The older MC W.Rokkor-HG is a different seven-element design, and the MD 35mm f/1.8 and Shift CA 35mm f/2.8 are separate lenses.
What to check
The common faults are age ones, mainly haze, fungus and oil on the blades. Later copies have a plastic aperture ring, so check it and its MD tab are undamaged.
01Haze: Ask for a photo with a flashlight shining through the lens from the back. The glass should look clear, with no grey fog.
02Fungus: Check the same photo for fine branching threads or spots. Clean glass shows nothing but the odd speck of dust.
03Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8. They should be dry and matte, with no shine or oil spots.
04Aperture ring: Look closely at the aperture ring and MD tab in the photos. The plastic should be whole, with no cracks or missing tab.
05Version: Read the front ring in the photos for MD, 35mm and 1:2.8. An MC W.Rokkor-HG or a 1:1.8 is a different lens.
06Focus ring: On arrival, turn the focus from 0.3 m to infinity and back. It should feel smooth and even, with no grit or tight spots.
We'd buy the US seller's MD W.Rokkor at $132 delivered, the cheapest complete copy here, or the New MD titled tested and graded Exc+5 at $150. This page is thin, with at least 13 for sale, and most ask $150–210 delivered, nearly all from Japan dealers, so treat the band as a rough guide. The 1977 MD W.Rokkor-X took 55 mm filters, the 1978 version 49 mm, and from 1981 it's the plain MD 35mm f/2.8 with the same five air-spaced elements, so buy on condition and check the plastic aperture ring and MD tab for cracks in the photos. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze and fungus, and skip the two listings that share one bare title and stock number across two accounts. It needs a Minolta SR/MD adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
