Minolta · Minolta SR (MC / MD) · From 1977
The MD Rokkor 50mm f/1.7 was the everyday kit lens on Minolta's late-1970s SLRs, and it uses the same six-element, five-group design as the MC Rokkor-X 50mm f/1.7 before it. MD lenses added a second tab on the aperture ring that tells an XD or X-700 body you've set the minimum aperture, which those cameras need for shutter priority and program modes. Joe McGloin's Minolta pages track the versions. MD Rokkor-X copies from 1977 to 1979 take 55 mm filters, copies from 1979 take 49 mm filters and stop down to f/22, and from 1981 the lens became the plain MD 50mm f/1.7, with no Rokkor name and the same formula. Copies sold outside North America read Rokkor where US copies read Rokkor-X. None of those tabs matter on an adapter. It focuses to 0.45 m and is light enough to forget on a small mirrorless body. On APS-C it frames like a 75mm, and on Micro Four Thirds like a 100mm.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Minolta SR (MC / MD) lens, and its mount sits 43.5 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
MD Rokkor-X copies from 1977 to 1979 take 55 mm filters and stop at f/16. From 1979 they take 49 mm filters and stop at f/22. From 1981 the lens is the plain MD 50mm f/1.7, with no Rokkor name and the same six-element formula, and late copies add an aperture lock. Outside North America it reads Rokkor instead of Rokkor-X.
Many of these were kit lenses, so look for haze, fungus, oily blades and dried-out focus grease. There's a cemented group in the design, so check for separation too.

Buying guide
We'd buy the US copy titled clean and tested with caps at $45 delivered, or try the no-bid auction now at $19. There are at least 187 for sale, nearly all from US sellers, and most ask $35–50 delivered, so a Japan dealer's Mint+++ copy with its box at $190, about 4.6 times the median, makes no sense for shooting. Rokkor-X copies from 1977 to 1979 take 55 mm filters and later ones 49 mm, and the plain MD 50mm f/1.7 from 1981 is the same six-element lens without the Rokkor name, so buy whichever copy looks cleanest. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze, fungus or separation and one of the blades at f/8, and make sure it isn't a Minolta AF or Sony A-mount 50, which won't fit. It needs a Minolta SR/MD adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
