The 50mm f/1.8 is the lens Olympus bundled with so many OM cameras, so there are lots of them about. It's the lightest of the Zuiko standard lenses, at about 165 to 170 g with a 49 mm filter thread and a 0.45 m close focus. Early copies read F.Zuiko Auto-S, the F standing for six elements, and wear a silver-chrome front ring like the early f/1.4. Olympus redesigned it around 1982, going from six elements in five groups to six in four. Olympus was slow to print MC on this lens, so the label isn't a reliable guide to its coating. Plenty of OM owners used it on a bellows as a cheap close-up lens. It's small and plain, and it suits a small mirrorless body. On APS-C it frames like a 75mm, and on Micro Four Thirds like a 100mm. Buy on clear glass and dry blades first, then pick the version you like.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Olympus OM lens, and its mount sits 46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Early copies read F.Zuiko Auto-S, have a silver-chrome filter ring and weigh about 170 g. A redesign around 1982 changed the formula from six elements in five groups to six in four and cut the weight to about 165 g. Olympus was slow to print MC on this lens, so a missing MC mark doesn't prove single coating. The 50mm f/1.8 AF and the 50mm f/2 PF are autofocus and power-focus lenses with no focus ring.
With so many made, the common faults are the usual age ones, haze, fungus and oil on the blades. Both versions have a cemented group, so check for separation as well.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy a US camera shop's copy at $68 delivered, or pay $85 for one a Japan dealer titles disassembled and cleaned, with US duties paid. There are at least 179 for sale and most ask $50–110 delivered, with US sellers here mostly at $41–81 and Japan dealers at $82 and up. Early copies read F.Zuiko Auto-S with a silver-chrome front ring, a 1982 redesign went to six elements in four groups, and a missing MC mark doesn't mean single coating, so buy on clear glass and dry blades. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back and one of the blades at f/8, and skip the two sellers under 97% feedback and the $390 unused boxed copy, about 5.4 times the median. It needs an Olympus OM adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
