Olympus · Olympus OM · From 1972
The 50mm f/1.4 was one of the first Zuikos, launched with the OM system in 1972, and it became one of the best-selling Zuikos ever. Its seven elements in six groups weigh just 230 g behind a 49 mm filter thread, which is small for an f/1.4. Olympus used the 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.8 as the colour-balance reference for the rest of the Zuiko range. Early copies are labelled G.Zuiko Auto-S and have a silver-chrome front ring, the silver nose collectors talk about. Later ones are black and, from about 1984, carry an MC mark for multicoating. Some unmarked copies may already be multicoated, so the colour of the coating reflections is another clue to age. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a bright, compact normal lens that focuses to 0.45 m. On APS-C it frames like a 75mm portrait lens. You'll read that early serial numbers are softer, but we couldn't confirm it, so judge each copy by its glass.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Olympus OM lens, and its mount sits 46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Early copies read G.Zuiko Auto-S and have a silver-chrome filter ring, the silver nose. Later copies are all black, read Zuiko Auto-S, and from about 1984 carry an MC mark. Every version shares the seven-element, six-group formula, 230 g weight and 0.45 m close focus, and some unmarked copies may already be multicoated. You'll see forum claims that early serial numbers are softer, and we couldn't find a source that confirms them.
Haze, fungus and oil on the blades are the usual age problems. It has a cemented group, so check for separation too, and early silver-nose copies are now around 50 years old.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Japan dealer's copy graded Exc+5 and titled tested at $80 delivered, or pay $126 for a silver-nose G.Zuiko titled disassembled and cleaned, with US duties paid. There are at least 93 for sale and most ask $100–170 delivered, mostly from Japan dealers, while US sellers here ask $94–163. Early copies read G.Zuiko Auto-S with a silver-chrome front ring, later ones are black and from about 1984 marked MC, and all share the same seven-element formula, so pick by condition. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze, fungus or separation in the cemented group and one of the blades at f/8, and skip the $491 copy at about 3.6 times the median. It needs an Olympus OM adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.

The lowest delivered lens here, titled working with a working aperture, at $11 delivered with 1 bid. The seller notes light haze on the rear element, so it will climb, and we'd stay well under the $80 a tested copy asks.
