Minolta MC Rokkor-X PG 50mm 1.4 Lens
Minolta · Minolta SR (MC / MD) · Early 1970s–1977
Minolta's MC Rokkor-PG 50mm f/1.4 is a big, solid 1970s normal lens, about 305 g with a 55 mm filter thread. PG is Minolta's old construction code. The first letter counts groups, with P for five, and the second counts elements, with G for seven. The Rokkor Files says it shares its optical formula with Minolta's well-loved 58mm f/1.2. Copies sold in North America read MC Rokkor-X, and late ones drop the PG from the front ring, but it's the same lens. In 1977 the MD Rokkor-X 50mm f/1.4 replaced it in a smaller, lighter body, and in 1979 Minolta changed the formula to seven elements in six groups. In The Rokkor Files' side-by-side film test, this MC lens was a touch sharper wide open than the first MD version and about equal from f/2 down. Joe McGloin's Minolta pages add that it lacks the rare-earth glass of some faster Rokkors. On a mirrorless body it's a fast, hefty normal lens, and on APS-C a 75mm-equivalent portrait lens.

On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Minolta SR (MC / MD) lens, and its mount sits 43.5 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
North American copies read MC Rokkor-X and the rest of the world's read MC Rokkor, and late copies drop the PG code. All are this seven-element lens with a 55 mm thread. The 1977 MD Rokkor-X 50mm f/1.4 kept the formula in a smaller body, and from 1979 the MD 50mm f/1.4 used a new seven-element, six-group design. The 58mm f/1.4 and f/1.2 are different lenses.
Fifty-year-old Rokkors often show haze, fungus and oil on the aperture blades. With seven elements in five groups there are cemented pairs, so check for separation as well.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy the copy titled tested at $64 delivered, or pay $102 for one a US seller titles CLA'd. There are at least 97 for sale and most ask $70–120 delivered, with US sellers here asking $44–127 and Japan dealers mostly $57–146, so there's no reason to pay $227 for a dealer's Mint grade. North American copies read MC Rokkor-X and late ones drop the PG, but it's the same seven-element lens with a 55 mm thread. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze, fungus or separation in the cemented pairs, and one of the blades at f/8. It needs a Minolta SR/MD adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
