Pentax · M42 screw mount · From 1971
Asahi's brochure called its 105mm f/2.8 the ideal link between the standard lenses and the long telephotos, a compact, well-balanced lens for scenery, portraits and news work. This is the multi-coated version from 1971, when Asahi and the American firm OCLI developed a coating of up to seven layers to raise contrast and cut flare. The optics are the Super-Takumar's 5 elements in 4 groups, focusing to 1.2 m with a 49mm filter, and the coating is what sets it apart. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a flattering portrait length that also works for details and street scenes from across the road. On APS-C it frames like a 158mm. The lug did open-aperture metering on the Spotmatic F and ES, and it does nothing on an adapter. On a plain M42 adapter, set the Auto/Manual switch to M, if your copy has one, so the aperture ring stops the lens down.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a M42 screw mount lens, and its mount sits 45.46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
It has the same 5-element, 4-group formula, 1.2 m close focus and 49mm filter as the single-coated Super-Takumar 105mm f/2.8, which has its own page. This one adds Asahi's 1971 multi-coating and the rear lug for open-aperture metering on the Spotmatic F and ES bodies. Camera-wiki lists no later rubber-grip SMC Takumar version of the 105mm, and the front ring reads Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR. Asahi's 1975 catalog and many sellers shorten the name to SMC Takumar.
Expect the usual age faults: haze or fungus inside, oily aperture blades and focusing grease that has dried or stiffened. If you also shoot film, the metering lug can catch on the mount screws of some older M42 bodies such as the Zenit-E.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy a copy graded Near Mint or Exc+5 with caps, like the $107 and $113 delivered ones from 100% Japan dealers, or pay $145 for one titled serviced and tested. There are at least 81 for sale, nearly all from Japan dealers, and most ask $120–180 delivered, while US sellers are scarce here and the one US copy at $119 shows a single-coated Super-Takumar front ring in its photo. Two listings show a different lens in the photo, a rubber-grip K-mount SMC Pentax and a Pentax 67 lens, so check that the front ring reads Super-Multi-Coated TAKUMAR 1:2.8/105 and ask whether the original hood comes with it. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze and fungus, and look at the coating with light glancing off it for rubbed patches. It needs an M42 adapter, with the Auto/Manual switch on M on a plain one, if your copy has a switch, or a pin-pushing one instead, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
