The 135mm f/3.5 was the long lens in the classic Spotmatic three-lens kit. Asahi's brochure for the multi-coated version recommends it as the telephoto to go with a standard and a wide-angle lens, and says the design had been giving Pentax users fine service for almost 16 years by then. It's a simple 4-element, 4-group lens that focuses to 1.5 m and takes 49mm filters, the same size as the Takumar standard lenses. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a classic short telephoto for portraits from a distance and compressed landscapes. On APS-C it frames like a 200mm. The modest f/3.5 aperture keeps the barrel slim, so it balances well on a small body. Set the Auto/Manual switch to M on that adapter, or the aperture ring won't close the blades.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a M42 screw mount lens, and its mount sits 45.46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Asahi made a 135mm f/3.5 from the 1953 Asahiflex on, as a preset Takumar, a Super-Takumar and a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. The multi-coated one shares this lens's 4 elements in 4 groups, 1.5 m close focus and 49mm filter, and its listings show up here too. The Super-Takumar 135mm f/2.5 is a different, faster lens, and the Tele-Takumar 135mm is an earlier lens.
Expect the usual age faults: haze or fungus inside, oily aperture blades and focusing grease that has dried or stiffened. A lens this long takes knocks, so look for dents at the front of the barrel.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy a Super-Takumar with its hood from a US dealer, like the $39 delivered one from a 99.8% seller, or pay $48 for one that adds a case and filter. There are at least 202 for sale, mostly from US sellers, and most ask $45–85 delivered, with Japan dealers at the top of that band. Multi-coated copies share the page and are just as good to buy, but read the front ring for Super-Takumar or Super-Multi-Coated with 1:3.5/135, since the preset and Tele-Takumar 135mm lenses work differently. Ask for a flashlight photo for haze and fungus, look for dents at the front of the barrel, and skip the $33 listing whose photo shows a rubber-grip 135mm f/2.5. It needs an M42 adapter, with the Auto/Manual switch on M for a plain one or on A with a pin-pushing one, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
