Asahi's brochure says the 200mm f/4 was designed with hand-held shooting in mind, with its length and weight kept down so the camera stays balanced. It's 5 elements in 5 groups, focuses to 2.5 m and takes 58mm filters. It isn't the longest Takumar, since the screw-mount line ran out to 1000mm. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a 200mm for wildlife, sport and squeezing distant landscapes. On APS-C it frames like a 300mm, so in-body stabilization helps, set to 200mm in the camera menu. Like the other Super-Takumars, it has an Auto/Manual switch. On a plain M42 adapter, set it to M or the aperture ring won't close the blades. Medium-format 6×7 Takumars share the name, so check that a listing is the M42 lens.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a M42 screw mount lens, and its mount sits 45.46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Camera-wiki lists a Super-Takumar and a Super-Multi-Coated version, and Asahi's brochure gives the multi-coated one the same 5 elements in 5 groups, 2.5 m close focus and 58mm filter. Its listings show up here too. The Super-Takumar 6x7 200mm f/4 is a medium-format lens for the Pentax 6×7 bayonet and won't fit an M42 adapter, and the Tele-Takumar 200mm f/5.6 is a different, slower lens.
Expect the usual age faults: haze or fungus inside, oily aperture blades and focusing grease that has dried or stiffened. A long, heavy lens takes knocks in shipping, so look for dents at the front and play in the focusing.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy a US copy with its hood and caps, like the $78 delivered one titled with clear optics, or pay $60 for one titled tested with a case, hood and filter in the photo. There are at least 88 for sale and most ask $60–95 delivered, with US sellers and Japan dealers asking much the same. Medium-format 6x7 Takumars share the name, so check the photos for a plain 42mm screw thread at the rear, and look for dents at the front of the barrel, since a long lens takes knocks. Multi-coated copies share the page too, and both need an M42 adapter, with the Auto/Manual switch on M for a plain one or on A with a pin-pushing one, and the model page lists the adapters by camera. Skip the $174 multi-coated copy from Japan, about 2.3 times the median.
