Olympus · Olympus OM · From the early 1970s
The 135mm f/3.5 was one of the best-selling Zuikos after the standard lenses, and it's easy to see why. It's 73 mm long with the hood pushed in, weighs about 290 g and takes the same 49 mm filters as the OM 50s. The hood is built in and slides out when you need it. Inside are five elements in four groups, one more than many 135s of the time, and Olympus said MTF tests showed a measurable gain in resolution and contrast from the extra element. Early copies read E.Zuiko Auto-T and later ones just Zuiko Auto-T, with an MC mark appearing around 1983 or 1984. It focuses to 1.5 m and stops down to f/22. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a light short tele. On APS-C it frames like a 200mm, and on Micro Four Thirds like a 270mm. Its sibling, the 135mm f/2.8, is a stop faster but heavier at 360 g and needs 55 mm filters.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Olympus OM lens, and its mount sits 46 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Early copies read E.Zuiko Auto-T and later ones Zuiko Auto-T, with an MC mark appearing around 1983 or 1984. The optics didn't change. The 135mm f/2.8 is a separate lens, 360 g with 55 mm filters, and the 135mm f/4.5 Macro only focuses on a bellows or extension tube.
Expect the usual haze, fungus and oily blades on a lens this age. The sliding built-in hood can wear loose over the years, and there's a cemented group to check for separation.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy the E.Zuiko with its case and caps from a US seller at $63 delivered, at the bottom of the band, or the one with a filter at $45 delivered with free shipping. There are at least 83 for sale and most ask $60–110 delivered, mostly from US sellers, and on a lens this cheap a Japan dealer's shipping can cost more than the lens. Early copies read E.Zuiko Auto-T and later ones Zuiko Auto-T, with MC from around 1983 or 1984, and the optics didn't change, so buy on condition and skip the $317 copy at about four times the median. The built-in hood slides out and can wear loose, so ask for a photo with it extended, plus a flashlight photo through the back for haze, fungus and separation in the cemented group. It needs an Olympus OM adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
