Canon's 50mm macro focuses from infinity down to 0.23 m, where it reaches half life-size on its own, with the magnification marked on the focusing scale. Canon designed it to stay sharp and evenly lit across the frame at close range, and it's a usable normal lens too. It has six elements in four groups and six aperture blades. The breech-lock version came in 1973 with S.S.C. coating, and the New FD version in 1979 is lighter, takes 52 mm filters and stops down to f/32. For life-size you need the matching extension tube, the FD 25 for the old lens or the FD 25-U for the New FD, and a listing with the tube included saves you hunting one down. On a mirrorless body with focus peaking it's a pleasant copy and close-up lens, and APS-C gives you more working distance for the same framing. Off a Canon body the blades stay open until the aperture lever is held, so set your adapter's lock.
It’s a Canon FD lens, and its mount sits 42 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Two versions with the same optics. The breech-lock Macro FD 50mm f/3.5 S.S.C. from March 1973 weighs 310 g, takes 55 mm filters, stops down to f/22, and reaches 1:1 with Extension Tube FD 25. The New Macro FD 50mm f/3.5 from June 1979 weighs 235 g, takes 52 mm filters, stops down to f/32, and pairs with Extension Tube FD 25-U. Both reach half life-size on their own. It's S.S.C.-coated, not S.C.
What to check
Old grease can make the long focus travel stiff or uneven. Haze, fungus and oily blades are the other usual age faults.
01Focus ring: Ask for a video turning the focus from infinity to 0.23 m. The barrel should extend smoothly with even resistance and no grinding.
02Haze and fungus: Ask for a photo of a flashlight shone through the lens from the back. The glass should look clear, with no milky fog or threadlike webs.
03Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8 while the lever is held. They should be dry and matte, with no shine or oil spots.
04Aperture lever: Ask for a short video pushing the lever on the back of the lens with the ring set to f/16. The blades should snap shut and spring fully open again when you let go.
05Extension tube: Check the photos for the tube if you want life-size. It should read FD 25 for the breech-lock lens or FD 25-U for the New FD one.
06Mount version: Look at the base of the lens in the photos. A chrome locking ring means the 1973 S.S.C. lens, and a black barrel with a release button means New FD.
We'd buy the New FD titled tested and working, caps in the photo, at $89 delivered from a Japan dealer, or the breech-lock S.S.C. without caps at $35 from a US seller and add caps, which cost a few dollars. There are at least 128 for sale and most ask $90–140 delivered, while most US copies here ask $35–128 and Japan dealers' near-mint grades sit toward the top. For life-size you need the FD 25 tube with the breech-lock lens or the FD 25-U with the New FD, and the US copy that comes with the FD 25 tube set asks $106 delivered. Ask for a video of the focus running out to 0.23 m and a photo of the blades at f/8 with the lever held, and skip the $600 copy titled with the 1:1 adapter, about 5.8 times the median. It needs a Canon FD adapter with its lock set so the blades close, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
