Nikon made a 135mm f/2.8 for the F from 1965, but the one you'll usually find is the compact 5-element version that arrived in 1976, became AI in 1977 and AI-S in 1981. Roland Vink's records put AI-S production through to 2005, and Nikon still listed it in 2002 alongside the autofocus 135mm f/2 DC. It weighs about 435 g, has a built-in telescopic hood, takes 52mm filters, stops down to f/32 and focuses to 1.3 m. It's one of the longest-serving Nikkor teles, and a sensible pick for indoor sports, stage and portraits. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a compact tele for head shots and details, and on APS-C it frames like about 200mm. It works on Nikon's FTZ adapter with stop-down metering. Nikon also sold a cheaper Series E 135mm f/2.8, so read the name ring.
It’s a Nikon F (AI / AI-S) lens, and its mount sits 46.5 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
The first Nikkor-Q Auto 135mm f/2.8 of 1965 was a heavier 4-element lens of about 610 g. The compact 5-element design arrived in 1976, became AI in 1977 and AI-S in 1981, so an AI and an AI-S share the same optics. The Series E 135mm f/2.8 is a separate 4-element budget lens engraved Nikon Lens Series E.
What to check
Haze, fungus and oily aperture blades are the usual age faults. It has one cemented group, so check for separation, and slide the built-in hood out and back to make sure it isn't loose or dented.
01Nikkor or Series E: Read the name ring in the photos. You want Nikkor and a metering prong on the aperture ring, while Nikon Lens Series E is the budget model.
02Haze and fungus: Ask for a photo through the lens with a flashlight behind it. The glass should look clear, with no fog, threads or spots.
03Separation: Ask for a photo looking through the glass toward a light. The element edges should show no rainbow or milky patches.
04Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8. They should be dry and matte, with no oil.
05Built-in hood: Slide the hood out and back on arrival. It should move smoothly and stay put when extended.
06Focus ring: Turn the focus ring from 1.3 m to infinity on arrival. It should be smooth and even, with no grinding or play.
We'd buy the US copy titled clean optics with caps at $141 delivered, or pay $182 for one titled serviced from a Japan shop. There are at least 94 for sale and most ask $150–250 delivered, a band Japan dealers set with mint grades, while US sellers here ask $85–163. An AI and an AI-S share the same five-element optics, so pick by condition, but read the name ring for Nikkor, since the cheaper Series E 135mm f/2.8 is a different lens. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze, fungus or separation in its cemented group, slide the built-in hood out when it arrives, and skip the 95% and 96.3% sellers and the $380 copy at about 1.9 times the median. It needs a Nikon F adapter, and Nikon's FTZ works with it on a Z body; the model page lists the adapters by camera.
