The 35mm f/2 was the first fast wide-angle for the Nikon F. Nikon released it in 1965 after two scrapped prototypes, then multi-coated it, restyled it, made it AI in 1977 and AI-S in 1981, all with the same basic 8-element design, which Nikon credits to Yoshiyuki Shimizu. Nikon kept selling it even after the autofocus 35mm f/2 arrived. When a Nikon lens designer revisited it on a Z 6 with the FTZ adapter, he found good contrast wide open, some astigmatism and coma flare toward the edges, and visible vignetting until about f/4. By f/5.6 to f/8 the whole frame is sharp. On the FTZ you set the aperture on the ring and the camera meters at that aperture, though the EXIF won't record the f-stop. It's compact, all metal and takes 52mm filters like most Nikkors of its day. On APS-C it frames like a 50mm.
It’s a Nikon F (AI / AI-S) lens, and its mount sits 46.5 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
The same basic optics run from the 1965 Nikkor-O Auto through the multi-coated Nikkor-O.C Auto (1973), the restyled 1975 version, the 1977 AI and the 1981 AI-S. The versions differ in coating, barrel and coupling. Pre-AI versions have a solid metering prong and no coupling ridge, and Nikon says non-AI lenses must not go on the FTZ adapter. The Series E 35mm f/2.5 is a different, cheaper lens engraved Nikon Lens Series E.
What to check
Expect the usual age faults: haze, fungus, oily aperture blades and dried focus grease. It has two cemented groups, so check for separation, which shows as a rainbow or milky patch at the edge of the glass.
01Version: Look in the photos for an orange f/22 on both aperture scales and a metering ridge at the back of the aperture ring. Without the ridge it's a pre-AI lens, which Nikon says won't go on the FTZ.
02Haze and fungus: Ask for a photo through the lens with a flashlight behind it. The glass should look clear, with no fog, threads or spots.
03Separation: Ask for a photo through the glass toward a light, looking at the edges of the elements. You want no rainbow or milky patches.
04Aperture blades: Ask for a photo of the blades stopped down to f/8. They should be dry and matte, with no shine or oil.
05Focus ring: Turn the focus ring end to end on arrival. It should feel even and smooth, with no grinding or loose play.
We'd buy the AI-S titled serviced at $304 delivered with free shipping and the shop's repair report in the photo, or the Near MINT copy at $229 if you'd rather pay less and check it yourself. There are at least 67 for sale and most ask $310–440 delivered, every one on this page from a Japan dealer, with grades and SIC serial claims setting the price. Look for an orange f/22 on both aperture scales and the metering ridge at the back of the ring, since Nikon says a pre-AI lens without it must not go on the FTZ, and ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze, fungus or a rainbow edge from separation in its two cemented groups. Skip the boxed unused copy at $750, about twice the median. It needs a Nikon F adapter, and Nikon's FTZ works with it on a Z body; the model page lists the adapters by camera.
