Nikon · Nikon F (AI / AI-S) · 1980–2005
Nikon built the 50mm f/1.8 AI-S as a pancake. Designer Souichi Nakamura took a standard 6-element Gauss layout and squeezed the gap around the aperture, which gave a lens 3 mm shorter than Nikon's 50mm f/2 with very little distortion. It came out in 1980 alongside the compact Nikon EM, and the same basic optics went into the Series E 50mm f/1.8 and later the autofocus 50mm f/1.8. Nikon's own write-up finds it a little soft with faint flare at f/1.8, punchier at f/2.8, even across the frame at f/4 and sharpest from f/5.6 to f/8. Close up and wide open, out-of-focus edges can look busy. On a mirrorless body it's a tiny, light fifty, and on APS-C it becomes a 75mm portrait lens. It's an easy way into Nikkors, and it works on Nikon's FTZ adapter.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Nikon F (AI / AI-S) lens, and its mount sits 46.5 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Roland Vink's version list shows three AI-S barrels. A long one like the 1978 AI was sold for export from 1981. A thin pancake with a rubber grip that focuses to 0.45 m was made for Japan from 1980. The common pancake from 1985 has a plastic grip and focuses only to 0.6 m. Nikon says the Series E 50mm f/1.8 shares the pancake's basic optics with a different exterior and coatings, but it's engraved Nikon Lens Series E and has no metering prong.
Age faults are the usual ones: haze, fungus and oily aperture blades. Rubber and plastic focus grips on lenses this old can also loosen or crack.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy the pancake graded Exc+5 and titled tested at $161 delivered, or pay $175 for one titled serviced and tested. There are at least 191 for sale and most ask $170–260 delivered, a band Japan dealers set, while the two US copies here ask $154 and $275. Check that the name ring says Nikkor and the aperture ring has an orange f/22 and a metering prong, since the Series E 50mm f/1.8 looks similar, and the focus scale's shortest distance tells the version, 0.45 m for the early Japan pancake or the long export lens and 0.6 m for the common later pancake. Ask for a flashlight photo through the back and look at the focus grip for cracks or a loose band. It needs a Nikon F adapter, and Nikon's FTZ works with it on a Z body; the model page lists the adapters by camera.
