Leica · Leica R · About 1970–2009
The Summicron-R 90mm f/2 is a 5-element design from Leitz Canada in Midland that arrived around 1970, and Erwin Puts says its optics never changed in more than 25 years. Don't expect it to be crisp wide open. Puts found low to medium contrast and some flare at f/2, a marked jump at f/2.8, and excellent results at f/5.6, comparable to the M version. He also says it was tuned to do better at close range, on the idea that reflex users shoot closer. That soft full-aperture look is why it's so often described as a portrait lens. It weighs about 560 g and focuses to 0.7 m. On a full-frame mirrorless body it's a head-and-shoulders portrait lens, and on APS-C it frames like about 135mm. The aperture is set on the lens, so a plain mechanical adapter is all it needs.
On a mirrorless camera
It’s a Leica R lens, and its mount sits 47 mm from the film. Every mirrorless mount below sits closer than that, so a plain adapter ring fills the gap and the lens still focuses to infinity. On a smaller sensor it frames tighter, like a longer lens.
Versions
Leica's catalogs list two barrels with the same 5-element, 4-group optics. Code 11219 takes Series 7 filters and ran until 1987, and code 11254 takes E55 filters and ran from 1987 to 2009. Early lenses are 2-cam and later ones 3-cam. Some are engraved Leitz Canada, and later ones just Leica.
Haze, fungus and oily aperture blades are the common age faults. It has one cemented group, so check for separation at the edges of the glass.
New to old glass? How to check a used vintage lens covers haze, fungus and the rest in detail.
Buying guide
We'd buy the US dealer's Leitz Canada copy with both caps at $650 delivered with free shipping, under the $700–1,150 band, or the Dutch dealer's 3-cam at $599 if you don't mind it shipping from Europe. There are at least 29 for sale from US, European and Japan dealers, and most ask $700–1,150 delivered. The optics never changed, so the older Series 7 barrel and the E55 barrel from 1987 take the same pictures, and the 2-cam or 3-cam mount doesn't matter on a plain mechanical adapter. Expect a soft, lower-contrast look at f/2 that sharpens by f/2.8, ask for a flashlight photo through the back for haze or separation at the edges and one of the blades at f/8, and skip the $519 listing whose photo shows a different Leica 90mm. It needs a Leica R adapter, and the model page lists the adapters by camera.
$599.00est. delivered
The lowest delivered Summicron-R here once you skip the $519 listing with the wrong photo, a 3-cam Leitz Canada lens at $599 from a Dutch dealer. The hood and rear cap are in the photo, and the title makes no condition claim, so ask for a flashlight photo through the back.
